Black Perinatal Mental Health Training
Scholarship Application | 2022-2023

With the generous support from Kate Spade New York, the Seleni Institute developed a Black Perinatal Mental Health Training in partnership with Dr. Marissa Long of ARC Counseling and Wellness to address mental health disparities in Black communities.

Seleni aims to better equip clinicians with culturally sensitive, respectful, and mindful treatment strategies to support Black birthing people and their families. Seleni and Kate Spade New York will be offering 200 full scholarships to professionals working in underserved communities through April 2023.

Racism and racial trauma continue to affect the mental health of Black birthing people. Black women in particular are more likely to experience traumatic births than white women. Postpartum depression (PPD) affects one in eight new mothers, but the risk is significantly higher for Black mothers. While Black women are more likely to have PPD, they are less likely to receive help. Providing access to treatment is crucial in improving the mental health outcomes in black communities.
