Requirements engineering – the key to sustainability
-A presentation of the Karlskrona Manifesto for Sustainability Design and the
sustainability awareness framework

When software systems are integrated into our society, the economy, and the environment, they have far-reaching effects. Therefore, they should be designed for the sustainability of the socio-technical system they belong to. This requires a paradigm shift in the way in which we create software systems. Requirements Engineering (RE) is key to drive this change, which should start by raising awareness of the relationship of a software-intensive system with sustainability.

Many are familiar with the "Manifesto for Agile Software Development", which has revolutionized software development. Today, we would like to present the "Karlskrona Manifesto for Sustainability Design", which is an initiative that aims to promote sustainable digital transformation.

The manifesto and its nine principles for sustainable digital transformation have been developed by a team of international experts from 10 countries.

The team of researcher behind the manifesto have also developed a workbook that
provides the instruments needed to carry out a Sustainability Awareness Workshop that brings different stakeholders to the table.

It is designed to help integrate sustainability into the digital transformation and provides a common framework that can guide consultants working on everything from requirements, design, development, testing and risk to governance and change management in general.

• It provides a framework for taking a sustainability perspective on digital

• It can help consultants drive sustainability objectives for their clients.
